How does Ozone Generator work?

Oct. 17, 2024

Working Principle

Ozone (O3) is an allotropic form of oxygen. Its chemical properties are very active and have a strong oxidizing ability. When it dissolves in water, it can kill microorganisms in the water, and its disinfection ability is stronger than that of chlorine and faster.

Applications:

It has widespread applications in the purification and disinfection of drinking water, swimming pool water, industrial water, hospital water, and domestic water.

The principle of ozone disinfection can be considered as an oxidation reaction.

(1) The mechanism of bactericidal reaction of ozone:

The bactericidal reaction of ozone is always very fast, unlike other bactericides: ozone can react with the lipid double bonds in the cell wall of bacteria, penetrate into the cell body, and act on proteins and lipopolysaccharides, changing the permeability of the cell, thereby causing the bacteria to die. Ozone also acts on the nuclear substances in the cell, such as the purine and pyrimidine in nucleic acids, to destroy DNA.

(2) The mechanism of virucidal reaction of ozone:

Ozone's reaction on viruses is first on the four polypeptide chains of the capsid protein of the virus, and then causes damage to the RNA, especially the formation of its protein. After being oxidized by ozone, the electron microscope can be seen that the surface of the phage is broken into many fragments, and many nucleic acids are released from it, interfering with its adsorption to the host.

The thoroughness of ozone disinfection is beyond doubt.
